Consistent, high-quality employee trainings are an incredibly important part of any workplace.
They promote a working culture of growth, ambition, development and productivity. They should not be ignored or taken lightly. Investing in your employees will yield much greater results than taking them for granted and replacing them. You want them to grow with your company, and be invested in each other’s success.
A recent study showed that 87% of millenials consider professional development crucial in a job. They want their job to be an opportunity to learn something new and useful, some new skill that can impact them and their career. They don’t just want to show up at work, do their thing for 8 hours, then leave and not think about the job again.
And this is a great thing, if you know how to take advantage of it. If you know how to provide them the growth that they desire.
Great resources for developing your employees are trainings and workshops. They offer them an opportunity to learn something new, or to develop a skill further.
Now, it is very important that you know and understand how to do this efficiently, or you will waste a lot of money and get nothing in return.
Organising Employee trainings can be a very hard task, especially if you have a lot of employees. You need to know which trainings are necessary for which groups of employees, how to measure their effectiveness, how to receive some feedback etc. And it can be pretty daunting work.
That is why we have decided to lay out a clear and simple structure for you. We have separated the whole process of conducting employee trainings into 4 distinct steps:
Mindset
This is something that is important before you start organising trainings. It is important for you to have a right mindset about it.
A lot of managers are afraid of giving employee trainings and workshops to their employees. They believe that their employees will develop too much, and then leave their company for a better offer.
This is a big sign of a scarcity mindset. A mindset that wants to preserve, instead of grow. But you can’t just keep things as they are and expect good results. If you are not going forward, you are going backward.
If you provide your employees a good and high quality education, they will respect you and be grateful to you. They will also be very happy with their job, because it allows them continuous growth and improvement.
Now let’s properly start.
Testing for growth opportunities
In order to organize employee training, you need to know what they need your help with. Your choice of training has to be grounded on real facts. That means that you have to have some form of performance management in place. A great way of doing this process, is using 360 Degree Feedback.
That is a method that clearly identifies a person’s shortcomings, as well as their biggest strenghts. If you want to know more about this method, and see if it is the right choice for you check out our article, Pros and Cons of 360 Degree Feedback.
Choosing the right format
There are many ways in which you could conduct these trainings. The choice is up to you, it will depend on the budget that you have and your priorities. You can offer your employees live workshops, or you can bring in a team into your company. You can also organise mentorship programs, where senior employees will teach juniors.
Another way of doing it is using an online platform like Udemy, Coursera, Simplilearn and many others.
Evaluation
If you want to know if your effort has payed off, you should have some sort of evaluation process set in place. If you did some sort of assessment beforehand, like 360 Degree Feedback, than you should do it again 6 months after the training. This will give you enough data to be able to compare and see if there has been any improvement.
And there you have it. This simple structure that we provided for you here will give you a clear roadmap to follow when doing your employee trainings.
