360 Degree Feedback and its DARK History

In our last article we covered the definition of 360 Degree Feedback and how experts use it in the modern workplace.

You would naturally think that smart scientists and Human Resources Managers invented this technology to ensure the growth of their business, right?

Well…not exactly.

Think about it, who needs their employees to be as effective as possible, without having any weaknesses and blindspots?

What boss can’t afford any mistakes in his workplace?

The answer is MILITARY.

First use of performance assessment

The first known use of 360 Degree Feedback was in the World War I by the American military.

They wanted to ensure that their soldiers are operating at their peak, and minimize any weaknesses they had. When World War II started, Germany took notice of this.

They decided to adopt this methodology and perfect it.

And so the 360 Degree Feedback that we know today was born. German military used this information to determine payments and promotions for the soldiers, and to further shape their military training.

Eventually, the war ended, but the experts were just starting with the 360 Degree Feedback method.

In 1950, the Esso Research and Engineering Group became the first company to use 360 Degree Assessment in a business envirmonment.

Soon, other companies started seeing the potential of this technology for business and performance management.

Before long, the 360 Degree Assesment method was starting to get popularized and well used globally.

In the past, 360 Degree Feedback was very far from being something any company could afford. People would everything manually, on paper.

In a bigger company, you would need dozens of experts just to collect all the data and properly analize it. And about ten more to convert all that data into usable reports that you could work with.

Then you would need to pay an expert or a psychologist, that then, give you guidelines for your employee’s further growth.

Today, the situation is very different.

Warzones are replaced by office buildings.

Dozens of 360 Degree Feedback experts are replaced by simple softwares like Best360, that do all the hard work for you.

No more paper and waiting three months for the assessment.

Instant results and continuous growth for your business and yourself.
